says of her work: "Metalwork can be the expression of one's self
just as sculpture may be, silversmithing not for functional construction
only, but for the visualisation of form and thought. I do not feel
constrained to silversmithing or goldsmithing, but chose the technique,
material or object that suits my idea."
By electroforming millinery fabric mesh Sonja could combine sewing
and metalwork techniques and developed sewing patterns for vessels
and spoons. The metal becomes transparent and light to give the
objects a new dimension.
The spoons may be used to serve honey, jelly or cream, or to sprinkle
sugar on desserts and fruit. The loosely woven fabric acts like
a sieve and the idea of a traditional sugar serving spoon becomes
surprisingly different without losing functionality.
The bowls serve well to keep fruit, also here the transparency
of the material is not only aesthetic, but also functional, since
it allows the circulation of air around the fruit.
Sonja, born in Bavaria, graduated from the Royal College of Art
in 2004 and has already shown with the Crafts Council at the V&A.
