Richard Whadcock's paintings are inspired by the Sussex Downs landscape.
Filtered through photography and memory, they are the result of
both physical and mental experiences. The paintings suggest the
presence and atmosphere of constantly changing conditions of a coastal
landscape such as shifting pressure of an approaching storm and
the lifting as it passes; the play of shifting light exposing and
shrouding details and transforming the familiar into the unfamiliar.
The economy of detail evokes a quiet power and the bare minimum
of information enables the viewer to open up their own personal,
visual memories.
Since his graduation from first Bristol and then the Royal College
with an M.A., Richard has been extremely successful contributing
to many group exhibitions across the country and been given several
solo shows including at the Northcote Gallery, London, Vertigo,
London and E1 Gallery, London.
